On June 18, 2002 the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners established the Cherokee County Hazard Mitigation Advisory Council, better known as "Cherokee Prepares". The purpose of this group was to identify and profile hazards, inventory county assets, estimate losses, develop a county-wide hazard mitigation plan, establish programs to prepare citizens and government agencies for disasters and finally monitor the progress of the local hazard mitigation plan.
In late 2003, Director Westbrook saw a need to expand this groups role and work began on the creation of the Emergency Management Program Advisory Council. The by-laws for this council were approved by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on January 6, 2004.
The group was very successful as the local hazard mitigation plan was completed and approved by GEMA and forwarded to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for approval in early 2004.
The council took on the role of monitoring the entire emergency management program and being the county Citizens Corps Council.
