Time to Prepare for Severe Weather
Posted By: R. Cornelison : 03/04/10 10:44 AM
Citizens are encouraged to prepare for severe weather events by making a plan and becoming familiar with severe weather terminology.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch - Tells you when and where severe thunderstorms are likely to occur. Watch the sky and stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio, or television for information.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Issued when severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar. Warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property to those in the path of the storm which could likely produce winds of at least 58 mph and/or hail of at least 1" in diameter.

Tornado Watch - Tornadoes are possible. Remain alert for approaching storms. Watch the sky and stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio, or television for information.

Tornado Warning - A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Take shelter immediately.

The best way to receive weather warning 24 hours a day is to have a NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio. Broadcasts of weather information - including warnings - can be heard 24 hours a day in practically every community in Georgia. In fact, some communities can hear weather broadcasts from more than one radio station. This can be advantageous. Or it can lead to problems. For this reason it is important to know enough about the broadcast system to make a choice of transmitter that will give you the most protection. For more information on Weather Radio follow this link: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ffc/? n=radio ...
